SUMMER IN THE CITY [20 Nov 2007|05:09pm]
I always had this feeling that I'd find Jesus one Sunday morning. I hoped I never would, but the truth is, I saw it coming around every corner. I thought I'd see him on a highway in Middle America, framed by fields in all their agrarian glory; or maybe in a lonely sleepy bar in Mexico, or after a long night of biting my nails and doing cocaine. Sure, he never came, or in any case I never found him, but in the back of my mind I always thought I knew. ....... )

HOW DO I PUT THIS NICELY? [25 Jun 2007|09:11pm]
i am really FUCKING fed up with this isaiah washington thing.

you would think he had killed someone to warrant this much negative attention, but no, he used the word "faggot" in an argument. okay, granted it's not the most diplomatic thing to say, but i could think of worse things. i hear things worse than that every day, and they don't just come out of the mouths of male heterosexual bigots. this guy is less of a threat and less of a delinquent than ninety percent of the disgusting, self-righteous, self-indulgent bullshit hollywood royalty that is making him the posterboy for "hate" and "intolerance." washington apologized on set, and his apology was accepted, and that was all that should have gone down. you don't have to like the guy, but he doesn't deserve to have his career destroyed because of this. he has no history of offensive behavior. he used a charged word. the evils in this world don't stem from people like washington saying "faggot." they stem from the fucking petty, wussy douchebags who will leap on an easy target and tear it to shreds because they're too fucking wimpy to take on today's real problems. there are bigger battles to fight so suck it up and get over it. fags.

the ones who don't enjoy themselves even when they laugh.
oh, yeah.
the ones who should have been shot in the cradle.
pow! oh, yeah.
the ones who say that's for me.
the ones who say, you know what i mean.
oh, yeah.
the ones who never get involved with politics.
oh, yeah.
the ones who say, yes, sir.
oh, yeah.
the ones who make love standing in their boots and imagine they're in a luxurious bed.
oh, yeah.
the ones who say: oh, what the hell.
the ones who believe in everything... even in god.
oh, yeah.
the ones who keep going, just to see how it will end.
oh, yeah.
the ones who are always standing at the bar.
the ones who are always in switzerland.
the ones who started early, haven't arrived and don't know they're not going to.
oh, yeah.

[03 Dec 2006|09:41pm]
i awoke to the sound of the upward bound
balloons beginning their cosmic flight
they spun me around
and said "lady, we've found"
the one for whom you should fight.'

'he's up in the air where saint peter stares
at the chaos down below
he's the millionaire
who pays all the fares
of your drunken cab rides home."

i stopped and i said with a smidge of dread
"i doubt he has helped me home
no fares did he give
he knows not where i live
and when i walk, i walk alone."

face the music (or lack, thereof). [08 May 2005|06:54pm]
of all the things that i am cynical about in this world, it breaks my heart that even music is one of them. there have been, and there are, many good artists. however, i can only think of a handful that have elevated music to a high art, to something that is timeless and unrepeatable, and none of them have had their heyday in the last twenty years. in this category i would place pink floyd, jeff lynne, simon & garfunkel, and the eagles. i'm sure i could think of a few others, but it's a very small group. these are the artists who blew everyone else away because they did not know the meaning of the phrase "filler track."

yes, there are the killers and radiohead and keane and the mars volta, all good bands with decent albums, but i would not describe any of them as astonishingly good. in fifty years, what will the classics be? will there even be any? granted, radiohead has a few amazing songs, and hot fuss is a fun album with more than just a couple good tracks, but none of these bands will -- or should -- go down in history as groundbreaking. i don't like saying this (for i am a radiohead fan), but my opinion is that the only reason radiohead has gotten such immense recognition and praise is that there's a lack of anything better. they're a good band, but they're also about as good as bands get nowadays, and that is disappointing. musicians either come out with one or two great tracks and then succumb to mediocrity, or burn out before they have the chance to become great.

not to say that there wasn't potential. jeff buckley could have done it, but he died before he got the chance to evolve and to me, his legacy is a small number of wonderful songs (a couple from grace and a few from sketches) that only insinuated a great talent. neutral milk hotel could have done it (aeroplane over the sea is, in my opinion, the best album of the decade; garth brooks' no fences is a close second), but they fell apart and left behind too few songs to be able to be judged in the same manner one judges bands that have over a hundred of songs to their credit.

so, now what? i am waiting for the next epic, the band that will resurrect the record labels, that will be the synthesis of art and marketability, that produces amazing music which is accessible, that puts together an album worth more than $17.99, that will make me actually want to purchase it and not download the single online.

i download music, yes. i realize that the labels are bleeding dry, the artists have little impetus to put out good albums. but they're bleeding dry for a reason; until the abovementioned saving grace comes along, they will continue to do so. i have no problem contributing to the downfall of an industry that, at the moment, is really not one worth saving.

it's been a long time. [19 Dec 2004|10:38pm]

even walking across the room was a thrill
so she'll do it many times

and she'll realize that the closest linear thing
to circles are lines

she doesn't notice when she bites her lip
or shakes her head

she's far away on a train with a nod
to the grateful dead

and the highways of thought that lead
by the hand

run out of their tracks and improvise
on land

and she says she'll never forget the days but
they'll never remember

the one time they left their proper place in time
and ventured
into december

one of my college application essays asks me to write about a person who has had significant influence on culture and thought. after going through many options (john locke, aristotle, lech walesa, matt groening), i decided to write on bob dylan. i'm giving it to you to scrutinize, so please comment.

[31 Jul 2004|09:04pm]

i was born on a high noon
looking at the sky
and a man said to my mother
"you'll need another try"

the ribbons and the satin
they never seemed to fit
and when the rain washed them away
i went to the park to play
and they said,
"honey, just watch the days go by"

i waited hour and hour
for the midnight sun to shine
but the stars and the moon they said
"it's not happening tonight"

the man on the dirt road
i've never seen before
but he had a strange look on his face
he said he came from another place
and he said
"it's a terrible thing when the days go by"

i asked him why
and he shook his head
he said they smile and then they say
"there's only so many of us left for you
we see you once and then we're through,
and then we have to f l y."

[p.s. i wrote that in five minutes and i don't really like it, but i decide to post it nevertheless]

i think there's a lot of truth to what he's saying (and i certainly admire that he has the guts to say it); but it's painful and nobody wants to hear it.

though i doubt jesse jackson would be defending these statements if they were made by a white man.

she said "i always loved those chandeliers"
their bright delinquent light
and champagne in the night
keep company until she disappears

by their second glass of wine the celing glows
the windows filled with smoke
and her friends softly spoke
of [[ love & cigarettes & overdose ]]

she was the kind of girl who'd break a nation
ruin all their plans
and wash clean her hands
and metaphysics had no explanation.

one nation, under dog [12 May 2004|07:38pm]
i've been having a little political feud with myself recently, but i think it's all clear now. more cynical than ever, but clear. i'd appreciate it if you took the time to read this and respond.

here is my own little "manifesto".

i can't be partisan anymore. i'm conservative, but "republicans" don't stand for what they should. party republicans disgust me; they're as wussy and manipulative and slimy as the democrats.

what's happening in iraq is horrible. i still support the war, but i think the way we fight it is tragic. there aren't enough troops, and they're not as well equipped as they should be, and they're not allowed to use their power. how on earth are they supposed to win a war if they're not allowed to let it down hard?

the media who bag on the troops in a time of war are traitors, and in my mind, may as well be tried for treason. do you know what we get when cbs broadcasts pictures of prison abuses (abhorrent though they may be)? we get nick berg having his head sawed off. even cnn says "the masked men who butchered him said they were angry about coalition abuse of Iraqi prisoners". the media put personal political aspirations and convictions before national security, and this is just wrong. what message do you think they're sending the terrorists when even americans are condemning american actions? the prison abuses should have been solved quickly and quietly and the people responsible should have been immediately punished because what they did is repulsive, but they should not be made the posterchildren of america's hypocrisy and cruelty.

and then there are the people who accuse the u.s. soldiers (notably pat tillman, the football player who turned down a contract with the nfl to enlist and had recently been killed in afghanistan) of being naive and stupid and exhibiting unnecessary bravado. these are people that don't think anything is worth dying - or living - for. even if you don't support the war, remember that the people fighting it are fighting to protect your very right to speak out and disagree with them.

why the fuck do latino illegal immigrants get such special treatment, as if they were victims of some horrible system? it's not written in stone anywhere, but they are eligible for free healthcare (whereas not all u.s. citizens are!) and our tax dollars pay for their english-as-a-second-language classes in our public schools. someone explain this to me. they break the law by coming to our country, a good portion of there are delinquent and destructive to our society, and yet in some cases they get better treatment than u.s. citizens do. we have to go to canada to feel special. also, immigrants can take citizenship tests in their native language. huh? call me crazy, but i like the idea of an america that speaks english.

the millions of dollars the government spends on anti-cigarette campaigns... why? why is the government using our money to infringe on our freedom? by this time, pretty much everyone knows that cigarettes are addictive and cause cancer and other health problems. those who are going to smoke are going to smoke no matter what the government does.

the feminism movement is a deviation from it's noble origins. women now want to be dominant and identical to men. co-ed public restrooms, if you will. they seem to forget that males and females are fundamentally different - physically and emotionally. they want to eliminate the perception of those differences. of course women can be the intellectual (and sometimes physical) equals of men, but that shouldn't stop them from getting married and raising kids and wearing make-up and high heels.

the u.n. should go suck some balls. it's a corrupt, morally lost and dysfunctional institution that did nothing when 900,000 people were being murdered in rwanda in 1994, and wanted to do nothing when saddam hussein violated practically all of their 15 resolutions concerning iraq. hans blix, the wmd inspector that the u.n. sent to iraq, claimed in an mtv interview that the biggest threat to the world was global warming, and not nuclear weapons in the wrong hands (does this mean that if hitler built an atom bomb, hans blix would be more concerned about putting your aluminum in the blue trashcan and your plastic in the yellow trash can?).

also, all this bullshit about america being responsible for extremist islamic resentment (note that i did put "extremist"; i am not categorizing muslims) is, well, bullshit. i understand that they may want to retain their values and culture. well, so do the amish. but you don't see the amish blowing up buildings, do you? no one is force feeding the arab countries mcdonald's and pepsi. if they had no interest in america enterprise, american businesses would not operate there.

and finally, america should stop being so damn apologetic. we're the most benevolent and benign world power that the earth has ever seen, and yet we get endlessly scrutinized for wanting to bring ::gasp:: democracy to oppressed nations.

hmm. i guess i got a little vulgar for a political rant? heh.
